Atomic Pile Of Portable Size Shown By Briton GERRARDS CROSSC England Nov 11 (AP) Robert Barker 28-year-old British scientist showed newsmen Friday a portable atomic pile the size of a garbage can which he said will produce as good radioactive isotopes as the British vast atomic piles at Harwell The isotopes are tracer elements important in medical and other research A group of British scientists Thursday studied the invention demonstrated in a sealed-off basem*nt room Barker said they expressed agreement that the portable pile could be made to produce isotopes effectively and economically Experts from the Ministry of Supply which bosses atomic energy research issued a statement after studying machine The statement quoted Sir John co*ckcroft head of the Atomic Research Center as saying such small devices as Barker's will not produce radioactive isotopes practical No American atomic experts have seen his development Barker said he extended an open invitation to any scientific team from the United States to examine it The machine is powered by uranium-oxide Barker said it was the result of three years of research by himself and other physicists at the A Chemical Company Ltd Maj Walsh chairman of the chemical said performance of the first experimental unit completed two years ago had justified construction of a commercial prototype model which is now under test He said they should prove especially valuable for use in radiotherapy departments of hospitals located in areas far away from atomic centers At Alexander Ark Saturday Nov 5 1949 Mrs Rusie Lee
