Step 1. Increase Your Friendship Level

In order to get anywhere with someone, you need to cultivate a relationship with them and increase their hearts. This can be done through giving gifts, completing quests, and simply by talking to them.

You can check your relationship progress with all the characters of Stardew Valley by heading to the Hearts Tab in the menu! From there, you can view every person you've met throughout the game, see how many hearts they've got, and whether you've given them a gift that week or not.

Press each villager to see more information about them, like their birthday and any liked gifts you may have already discovered they enjoy.

Step 2. Give Them a Bouquet

A gift that shows your romantic interest. Pierre's General Store100g

The morning after you reach 8 hearts with an eligible NPC, you will unlock the ability to purchase a Bouquet from theGeneral Store. Giving someone a Bouquet indicates to that person that you have strong feelings for them and want to start dating.

After giving someone a Bouquet, their dialogue with you will change accordingly, and you will officially be out of the friendzone and in a relationship.

You can break up with someone by giving them a Wilted Bouquet. A Wilted Bouquet is a symbolic bunch of ruined flowers that you can craft by placing a Bouquet and a piece of Coal in a Furnace. An NPC will lose 5 hearts automatically after receiving their Wilted Bouquet, but you will still be able to talk to them and give them gifts.

Step 3. Give Them a Mermaid's Pendant

Mermaid's Pendant

Once you reach 10 hearts with your significant other, you can ask them to marry you by giving them aMermaid's Pendant. There are a few tasks you have to complete before you can do this, though. Here's what you need to do:

  • Give someone a Bouquet.
  • Reach 10 hearts with them.
  • Fix the bridge at the Beach.
  • Upgrade the Farmhouse at least once.

The first two tasks make sense, and you're likely well on your way to making them happen if you're thinking about pursuing marriage in Stardew Valley. The other two tasks are a little more obscure.

Upgrade the Farmhouse

There is only enough room for one person in the base Farmhouse that you start with. When you marry someone, they move in with you to live on your farm. So, of course, you need to upgrade your Farmhouse so there is enough room for them. You can't both sleep in a single bed, after all.

To upgrade your Farmhouse, head to Robin's Carpenters Shop during opening hours and select the dialogue option that reads Make House Renovations.

You need 10,000g and 450x Wood to upgrade the Farmhouse.

Fix the Bridge at the Beach

The person who sells the Mermaid's Pendant is hiding in a blocked-off area at the Beach. If you make your way to the Beach and turn right, you will see a broken bridge there. You can fix the bridge using 300x Wood, or, alternatively, you could purchase the second Community Upgrade from Robin.

After ticking all of those boxes, head down to the Beach when it's raining and cross the bridge. You should see theOld Marinersitting on the northern side of the expanded Beach area. Speak with him to purchase the pendant for 5000g. Give it to the person you wish to marry, and in a few days, the ceremony will happen!

In Winter, the Old Mariner will only appear if you use a Rain Totem.

Step 4. Get Married!

The wedding will happen three days after you've proposed to your significant other (unless there's another event already scheduled for that day).

After the ceremony, your partner will move in with you, and you will live together at the Farmhouse. Make sure you speak with them daily and give themgiftsto keep growing your relationship level (which can go up to 14 hearts instead of 10).

If you don't care for your spouse by talking to them or giving them gifts, they will grow sad and refuse to help you around thefarm. When your spouse is happy, however, they will perform helpful chores, like watering your crops for you, and occasionally surprise you withgifts!

How to Have a Baby

After marrying someone, you can expand your family by having children with them. This will only be possible if you've upgraded your Farmhouse a second time to include a nursery room. The nursery room is located at the top right corner of the Farmhouse and is automatically fitted with two child-sized beds.

You need 50,000g and 150x Hardwood to upgrade your Farmhouse and unlock the ability to have children.

Having kids in Stardew Valley is easy but hard to predict. You'll have to wait until your spouse asks you if you want to have or adopt a child; this event will happen after going to bed one night. You can answer yes or no according to what you want.

You can only have two children on your farm, and they will never grow up past the toddler stage.

How to Get Divorced

If things don't go as planned or you want to try your luck with another person, simply divorce your current partner by going to the Mayor's Manor and interacting with a small book on the left side of the house. Doing so will give you the option to divorce your spouse for 50,000g.

After the divorce, your ex-partner will treat you coldly and won't accept any gifts from you.

If you end up regretting your decision, you can go to the Witch's Hut and interact with the shrine to erase all of your ex-spouses' memories. This will cost you 30,000g, but afterward, you'll be able to date and remarry that NPC.

Marriage in multiplayer mode works the same as during single-player. It is important to note, however, that you can't both marry the same person. You also have the option to marry another player. The process is a little different since all you have to do is give the player you want to marry a Wedding Ring.

You can get the recipe for crafting the wedding ring from the Traveling Cart for 500g.
