What does #FilmForward mean to you? We spoke to some of the very first cohort who joined the #FilmSkillsFund's landmark inclusion programme in 2021 and the people who hired them. For Jenny Stimpson, the reason for applying to Film Forward was clear. Having worked as an experienced and award-winning producer for the BBC, Jenny wanted to realise her dream and establish herself in feature films. She applied successfully, landing her first placement on the programme as a production coordinator on a feature being shot in Glasgow.Jenny notes how important the programme was for the industry, adding: “ScreenSkills puts money, energy and resources behind promoting diversity and inclusion and to be a prod and poke to executives that are ultimately making the programmes. It’s a win-win situation. It’s not just about productions taking crew from underrepresented groups for the sake of it; it’s about demonstrating the benefits and business case for why they need to widen up the sources of where they look for crew and talent."Sound designer Chad Orororo had dreamt of working in film since he was a 15-year-old hooked on Transformers at the cinema. The difficulty, as he notes, was coming from a background – he is of Nigerian-Grenadian heritage – that is under-represented in the industry. That’s where applying for Film Forward came in: “I’ve made a strong reputation for myself – I’ve got the technical credentials. But it’s the glass ceiling of not having the experience or connections to work in a different genre. Film Forward enables me to utilise my skills where I want to be."Chad started his placement on Film Forward, as assistant effects editor on feature film #RagingGrace, in March 2022 - a production which also contributed to our Film Skills Fund. The film’s producer, British Vietnamese independent filmmaker Chi Thai, spoke to us about her experience taking placements: “It was fantastic to bring things full circle on Raging Grace, where I collaborated with ScreenSkills - benefiting from their Film Forward programme (working with Chad Orororo) and Trainee Finder, which helped us recruit and fund two trainee placements on production. I would urge all film producers to make use of ScreenSkills in their productions moving forward."British film #Scrapper was another production that contributed to the Film Skills Fund and welcomed trainees from our Film Trainee Finder programme and a member of the Film Forward cohort onto production.Speaking of the experience, the film’s producer, Jennifer Monks, said: “Working with ScreenSkills on Scrapper was an absolute joy. The recruitment of a Film Forward crew member was the icing on the cake as, not only were we able to bring in new trainee entrants, but we were also able to offer established crew the opportunity to step up and progress in their careers."Applications for Film Forward 2023 are closing soon. This is one of Krakow's most astonishing, thought-provoking and "undiscovered" (as irony would have it) sites. It's situated only about two kilometers from Kraków's UNESCO Old Town area, and yet, if you ask a random local resident in the city about directions, my guess is that only about 10% would be able to show you the way or explain how to get there, despite the fact that, 30 years ago, one of the most important productions in #cinema history, was being filmed here for weeks - resulting in some of the film's most memorable scenes. In that sense, the mysterious Liban Family Quarry in Kraków remains "undiscovered".The story of Schindler's List (the #film) and its multiple film set locations in Kraków (and other cities) is a fascinating one. Not because the film was awarded 7 #Oscars almost exactly 30 years ago, nor even because it made some of the most renowned directors/cinematographers and many of the world's outstanding #actors spend weeks in Kraków, but because of the power of the #story itself and its rich layers of subtext and contemporary implications. Finally, because of the impact this film production has had on the "Kraków's soul", on the city's collective, psychological readiness to confront some incredibly painful memories of the 1940s.As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm working on a bigger #reportage story on this topic. In case you were wondering, I'm not doing it as a commercial project or for anyone in particular. I'm doing it because I have long believed it matters and I finally have enough time (and meticulously collected past video footage) on my hands to take it a step further...#SchindlersList

It is interesting to be part of a film society in 2023 – a time when its raison d'être faces more questions than ever before, given that watching a film has never been easier! In times like these, it is important for student-led film societies to realise that embracing technology, albeit with caution, is more useful than standing in its way, and evolving with time is a sign of strength, not weakness. One notable example here is the International Inter University Short Film Festival, which began in 2007 by Dhaka University Film Society, prior to the wide availability and use of the internet in the country. However, by harnessing the power of technology in the following years, the festival has evolved to platform, promote and capacitate student filmmakers globally. This year alone, 1671 short films by student filmmakers from 96 countries competed in the festival. As the curtain falls on the 15th edition, and my involvement with this festival for over half a decade also comes to an end, it is reassuring to know that the festival has become something bigger than all of us with a life of its own, and will continue to grow for the years to come. #IIUSFF #DUFS #FilmSocietyMovement
