When REME hit the Beach! *During a recent visit to the REME Museum, we were intrigued by the Centurion Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle (BARV). This was used to support amphibious operations with; recovery of vehicles broken or “drowned” after leaving the landing craft, pushing beached landing craft back into the water and other beach tasks. For this the “Cent” was modified with a different superstructure which brought the weight down <40 tons making it the lightest of Centurion variants.Being a Cent it’s fitted with Horstman Bogie suspension, so of course we couldn’t help but take a look! But…we were surprised to see only undamped units (the gun tanks have damped front/rear and undamped centre, see picture of cutaway damped unit below) as well as what looked like sealing added. A completely undamped armoured vehicle is unusual.We are obviously proud of our products but the Horstman Centurion Bogie is no longer in production and even our oldest and boldest on the team are too young to have been involved in its design. So, we are throwing this one out to you dear #Horstman followers for your thoughts! :)What do you think was the reason for this change to undamped units? Were the units replaced for weight saving? Did the damped units prove difficult to seal? Do you have experience on the the Cent BARV? Interestingly the Cent BARV role even today presents an interesting conundrum. Maintaining the damping setting for a standard full weight vehicle would mean the lighter BARV would have stiff damping. Further, as the main role for the vehicle is to be in deep water, the natural buoyancy could reduce the effective weight down further, but setting damper rates for a lower weight could then make for a poor ride if subsequent land operations are required (moving stores or troops inland during the Falklands War for example) and of course being lighter weight meant it was the fastest of all centurions, so good damping needed at times!So, an example of the #engineering considerations that Horstman assess with vehicles and users. Today of course we have more technology and experience, with active damping technologies that would ensure “correct suspension performance, at the right time” in sealed units. Interestingly also, today we still see a demand for armoured vehicles that can swim or deep wade; AMV, Borsuk and AAVA7 being just a few examples where Horstman delivered its expertise in this very area.The Centurion BARV was actually the last Cent in British service, even seeing service in Iraq in 2003 before being replaced by Leopard 1 in a BARV configuration. That means over 50 years of service and over 50 years of Horstman Bogie Suspension being used!*authors note – includes Royal Marines mechanics who might take issue with this, beach recovery is your role today of course Royal!British Army Royal Marines #engineering #mobility

During our yearly global business development meetings in Bath, England we were honored to spend a day at the REME museum in Lyneham, England. Horstman Business Development team learned the role that the British Army’s perform on British Army operations.
